LOCAL CHEESES
 
 
The river bar & grill would like to present its cheese board, which has been carefully selected by the proprietor and staff. These local cheeses offer a fine variety of flavour and texture and can be enjoyed with a glass of wine or as an excellent conclusion to a meal. The cheeses are accompanied by artisan bread, biscuits, homemade fruit chutney and celery.

Colston basset stilton
The only hand-ladled stilton still in production in Britain, this cheese has a creamy texture, medium blue veining and mellow nutty after taste. Blue cheese is only permitted to be called stilton if it is made in Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire or Derbyshire. Colston basset is arguably the best stilton available.
 
Cornish yarg
Distinctive by being wrapped in nettles, this is a mild, citrus cheese from cornwall. Far from being an ancient cornish word, “yarg” spells “gray” backwards, said to be the name of the family who originally developed the recipe.
 
Oak smoked lancashire
From inglewhite, near preston, a buttery, creamy lancashire cheese is smoked over oak whisky barrel chippings which give a beautiful, silky texture and a mellow smoked flavour.
 
Snowdonia extra mature cheddar
also known as black bomber, this very popular cheese has a creamy texture and rich taste. Snowdonia extra mature cheddar is a major success story of recent years. Originally established as a means of providing employment in the denbeigh area of north wales, the cheese has proved very popular and has many, many fans.
 
Gruth dhu crowdie
Is a log shaped soft cheese with a creamy, yet slightly sour taste introduced to the scots by the vikings. Gruth dhu is a blend of crowdie and double cream introduced recently by artisan cheese makers, the stone family. Gruth dhu means “black crowdie” black because it is rolled in toasted pinhead oats and black pepper to create a tasty twist on the traditional product.
 
Scrumpy sussex
From stongate village in east sussex, this is made with un-pasturised milk using traditional methods and made to the recipe of olde sussex cheese – a tangy creamy cheddar-type cheese. The garlic, cider and herbs are gently blended with the curd, so when the maturation of the cheese takes place, the added ingredients have time to infuse and disperse their distinctive zingy flavours. Perfect for an autumn evening with crusty bread and a flagon of cider!
